Helderberg Cricket Club’s (HCC) first team put on a dominant display of batting when they sailed to a bonus-point victory over Langa Cricket Club at Helderzicht Sports Grounds in Somerset West on Saturday (4 February).

The Division 1C fixture was played in perfect, sunny conditions, with the home side HCC batting first. The opening pair of of Craig Petterson and Gary-Jon Sylvester gave their team a good start, before Petterson (24) was dismissed.

Declan Fredericks stepped up to the crease, and together with Gary-Jon Sylvester, he built a solid partnership.

Wickets were hard to come by for Langa CC as HCC batsmen fell at far between intervals. The hosts eventually set a target of 275/5 in their 50 overs.

Gary-Jon Sylvester (76) was the top performer, followed by Junaid Sylvester (65), Dominic Daniels (38) and Declan Fredericks (33).

At the change of innings, Langa CC struggled early on and never really got going as they regularly lost wickets. The HCC bowling attack, led by Shane Fredericks, made quick work of the batting line-up, bowling them out for 76 in 24 overs.

Shane Fredericks (5/22), Damian Jooste 3/20 and Dexter Hindley 1/17 were the pick of the bowlers.

The HCC second team played away against Northerns-Goodwood CC, but were unable to secure a win.

The visitors HCC scored a meagre 90, which proved too little to defend and they eventually went down by eight wickets.

Algrin Beukes (17), Tyrone Ross (12) and Heinrich Brits (14) were the only batsmen to offer any resistance, while Sean Fredericks (2/19) was the top performer with the ball.

  • This coming weekend will see both the HCC first and second teams playing at home against Wynberg CC and Bellville CC respectively.
