Strong winds in Strand early on Thursday morning (13 November) resulted in a glass panel falling from an upper balcony at Hibernian Towers, crashing onto Beach Road and slightly injuring three people.

Authorities rushed the scene, just after 07:00, where a temporary road closure was put in place as another loose glass panel posed further danger to motorists and pedestrians.

According to a paramedic fragments from the shattering glass injured three people taking an early morning walk. “They were treated on the scene and elected to take themselves to hospital for further treatment.”

Sean Brown of Body Corporate Assistance (BCA) Western Cape, managing agents for Hibernian Towers, said a team was immediately dispatched to the site to investigate the circumstances leading to the incident.

“We are still trying to establish exactly what happened,” he said. “The area has since been deemed safe by authorities.”

One lane in Beach Road, between Da Gama and Sarel Cilliers streets, was closed for about two hours, resulting in peak morning traffic being slightly diverted. The road re-opened just after 09:00.
