A 14-run victory for Helderberg Cricket Club (HCC) against Khayelitsha CC at the Helderzicht Sports Grounds on Saturday 2 December was enough for the home-side to climb up to third spot in the First Division D log standings.
HCC opted to bat first in near-perfect conditions and started off strongly as Damian Jooste anchored the innings with a score of 59.
Despite losing wickets at regular intervals runs were flowing smoothly and notable contributions by Gary-Jon Sylvester (34) and Chalynn Hess (18) helped HCC set a defendable total of 186 all out.
Khayelitsha also started off strongly and scored above the required run rate, however Dexter Hindley led the bowling charge for HCC and claimed 5-49. Jooste (2-36) and Gregan Mouers (2-36) also chipped in with some excellent bowling to bowl out the visitors for 172.
“It was a fantastic game and we would like to thank all our supporters who came out in large numbers to cheer us on,” said HCC player Sean Fredericks.
HCC is in action again at Helderzicht this weekend when they host Langa CC.
In First Division A, Hottentots-Holland Cricket Club (HHCC) faced Avendale CC at the Navy Sports Ground. HHCC won the toss and sent Avendale in to bat first. The visitors took control of the game moving to 130-1. A great fightback from HHCC saw them dismiss Avendale for 190. Naeem Rhoda (4 wickets) and Mieftaah Oliver (2 wickets) were the pick of the bowlers.
In the batting department HHCC lost early wickets and never recovered from it and were eventually dismissed for 130. Captain Waleed Smith was the only contribution scoring 52.
This coming weekend HHCC will face Pinelands at the Navy Sports Ground.
In First Division B, Somerset West Cricket Club lost the toss and were sent in to bat against Bishop Lavis, setting a target of 207. The top performers with the bat were Jan Rademan (57), Paul Castignani (43), and Matthew Dickson (27). Their partnerships and contributions laid a solid foundation for the team.
At the change of innings Bishop Lavis faced a challenging target and the SWCC bowlers, led by Juan van der Walt (3-31) and Matthew Dickson (2-16), dominated the opposition.
Ghaulied van Schalkwyk also made contributions with 2 wickets, ensuring Bishop Lavis struggled to build solid partnerships. The disciplined bowling attack limited Bishop Lavis to 163 runs in 42.5 overs to hand SWCC the win.
SWCC’s next fixture is against Victoria CC, log leaders of the league, on Saturday 9 December at Radloff Park.
In the second division Strand Cricket Club walked away with 10 points over the weekend after Philippi CC didn’t pitch for their game on Saturday, and Wesbank CC forfeited their game on Sunday. This weekend Strand have a bye.
