GBNW chairperson Steve Paul and a fellow watch member was arrested on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on Friday (31 May).

The chairperson of Gordon’s Bay Neighbourhood Watch (GBNW), Steve Paul, was arrested last Friday (31 May) for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, Gordon’s Bay police have confirmed.

He was arrested along with another watch member at around 16:00.

“We can confirm a case of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition is being investigated,” a media statement from Gordon’s Bay police divulged.

“He had his first court appearance at the Strand Magistrates’ Court on Monday 3 June, and the case is currently on the court role.”

The statement did not clarify when the next court appearance would be.

Paul was elected chairperson of GBNW at the beginning of last year and, pending the outcome of the investigation, vice-chairperson Leon Lottering is currently stepping up as acting chairperson.

Commenting on the matter, the chairperson of the Gordon’s Bay Community Policing Forum (CPF), Edwina Hadfield, said the CPF was in contact with the Department of Safety and Security Police Oversight and Community Safety to ensure smooth transition of the neighbourhood watch that plays a pivotal role in the safety of Gordon’s Bay.

“The Community Policing Forum, together with the police plays an oversight role for the Gordon’s Bay Neighbourhood Watch,” she said.
