Strand motoring enthusiast Patrick Vermaak submitted this manipulated photograph by Nathan Geduld, comprising an action photograph of the winner of the first and only Gordon’s Bay Hillclimb, Denis Joubert in his Chevron-BMW B8 on 20 December 1969, along with a photograph of the same final corner in Suikerbossie Drive taken on Thursday 16 December. “At the time Denis, an architect, was resident in Gordon’s Bay and his Chevron-BMW B8 was a state-of-the-art international endurance racing weapon from Paul Owen in England. The popular annual Springbok Endurance Series included the Castrol three-hour at the Killarney International Raceway. Denis would become chairperson and president of the Western Province Motor Club for longer than he cares to remember, but it is worth remembering that 52 years ago, on 20 December 1969, he became the first and only winner of the Gordon’s Bay Hillclimb run over Suikerbossie Drive. Few would even be aware that such an event ever took place in Gordon’s Bay,” said Vermaak.Image: Nathan Geduld
