Gordon’s Bay Charity Chest, a charity shop sustaining the work of five social support and upliftment organisations, celebrated its second birthday on Thursday 22 September.
Started jointly during Covid by the Gordon’s Bay Lions, Gordon’s Bay Outreach, Gordon’s Bay Residents Association (GBRA), Gordon’s Bay Neighbourhood Watch and United church, to support the local community, it has raised more than R300 000 distributed more than 2 000 parcels to families in financial distress.
“The aim was to serve the community through giving people who are getting rid of things they no longer need or simply want to contribute,” the partners explained in a joint statement. “The proceeds of the shop are divided between the five organisations to support their individual social upliftment projects. Each organisation with their own team work one day a week. Our ‘Covid team’ continues to meet three times a week to distribute food donations to local charities, old age homes, soup kitchens and school feeding schemes.”
The charity shop, open Tuesday to Friday from 12:00 to 17:00 and Saturdays from 8:30 to 12:30, is situated on the corner of Faure Marine Drive and Waterway Road, Gordon’s Bay.
