Nikalau Volsteedt, a Grade 12 learner of Parel Vallei High School, has returned from the African Continental Track Cycling Championships with an impressive medal haul, including a gold, two silvers, and a bronze.

The 17-year-old’s exceptional performance at the competition also saw her shatter both the South African and African records in the individual pursuit event, solidifying her status as a rising star in the world of track cycling.

“It feels really special,” an ecstatic Volsteedt shared, reflecting on her experience representing SA on such a significant stage. “I’m beyond proud to represent my country with other awesome athletes.”

Volsteedt, who has been track cycling for three years, got into the sport because “it looked like fun, and I was right โ€“ it is”!

Her passion and dedication have clearly paid off, with the African Championships standing out as a major highlight. “To compete at continental level for my country is special,” she remarked.

Another significant achievement for Volsteedt was her stellar performance at this year’s National Track Cycling Championships, where she “surprised” herself by winning seven individual gold medals.

The gold medal she won in the individual pursuit event at the continental showpiece was particularly meaningful for Volsteedt. “All the medals mean a lot to me. I went to Egypt in hopes of winning a gold medal in the individual pursuit race; adding an African and national record is a bonus.”

She attributes her record-breaking success in the race to a combination of rigorous training and a strategic approach during the race. “It is definitely a mental game. My training was important to be able to compete here, but without a structured plan on the day, I wouldn’t have gotten there. Having time splits each lap to ensure that you don’t burn yourself out at the end is crucial.”

Competing at the Cairo International Velodrome was an experience in itself. “The venue was amazing. This track is made of wood, so it feels so fast,” Volsteedt explained. “It was hot summer temperatures, so the racing started late in the afternoon. The spectators were so supportive cheering us on.”

Balancing her demanding training schedule and competitions with her academic commitments at Parel Vallei High presents a significant challenge for Volsteedt โ€“ especially in her matric year. “It’s definitely a challenge; it’s really hard trying to fit in training with loads of schoolwork.”

Volsteedt’s qualification for the championships involved meeting specific time standards and sending a letter of interest months in advance. Her strong showing at nationals, where she secured numerous victories, ultimately sealed the deal.

Looking ahead, Volsteedt plans to allow for her recent achievements to sink in and focus on her academics. However, her aspirations in track cycling remain high. “I’ll also be building up for the elite level since I would like to go back to continental champs next year,” she revealed.

For other young, aspiring cyclists, Volsteedt offers invaluable advice: “Dream big, focus on the small steps and remember to have fun, because why would you do it otherwise? Also, keep on trying. Failure is part of the process.”

Volsteedt expressed immense gratitude to her parents for their unwavering support throughout her journey. “I would like to thank my parents for supporting me in this entire journey โ€“ on the sidelines with encouraging words and, of course, the financing part to help me reach my dreams.”
