The Boland Islamic Council Women’s League (BICWL) hosted a “Glitz and Glamour High Tea” event on Sunday 28 August to celebrate Women’s Month and raise funds to assist its beneficiary for 2022, Courage to Care, a Macassar-based organisation that cares for children with disabilities.
In all, 250 women from various surrounding areas, such as Eerste River, Blackheath, Macassar, Sandvlei, Kramat, Firgrove, Strand, Stellenbosch, Cape Town and Paarl, attended this prestigious event, where they were celebrated for the role they played, not only in their homes but also their communities. They came dressed to the nines in their “glitz-and-glamour” finery, and the event was a major success.
Its highlight was the handover of a variety of toiletries worth thousands of rands to Courage to Care.
The BICWL was established in 1998, and its membership includes women from all over the Boland and Cape Town. It is a non-profit organisation that functions mainly to donate the proceeds of joint fundraising efforts to deserving institutions and charitable organisations across the spectrum of religion and race.
Since the first effort to raise funds was launched in 1999 a total of approximately R500 000 has been distributed, and one major contribution has been R23 000 donated to the Groote Schuur Hospital Cancer Unit in 1999 and R50 000 to Tygerberg Hospital Cancer Unit in 2020.
Other beneficiaries to date have been old-age homes, institutions for the disabled, centres for abused children, female inmates of the Worcester Prison, trauma centres at police stations, organisations caring for street children in the Boland, youth programmes and children’s wards at hospitals in Boland towns. BICWL also assists HIV/Aids organisations and hospices with fundraising.
For the last 20 years BICWL has also hosted “A Walk for Cancer” to raise funds for organisations working with cancer patients.
