The DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette pulsed mentalism performer Bryan Miles with five questions to find out what a mentalist is, who is Bryan Miles and to see why readers should attend his upcoming show.

Miles is taking his new show, Hidden Senses, to The Drama Factory stage from Friday 9 to Saturday 10 June.

Five questions for Bryan Miles:

  • Where were you born and tell us a bit about your childhood and life thus far?

I am a Somerset West local – born and bred! Matriculating from Paul Roos Gymnasium. As a young kid I was always pulling my toys apart. I wanted to know how they worked and why they worked. This led me to understanding how easily the human mind can be fooled. I then read every book I could on magic and hypnosis, and later on trained with a hypnotist. I decided that I didn’t want to make people look like fools on stage, and so I adopted a more mature approach towards magic and hypnosis. I began performing small shows and eventually was invited to perform at the prestigious Magic Castle in Hollywood. I also starred in my very own 13 part TV series for SABC 3. I have headlined luxury cruise ships for over five years and now, I am finally bringing my one-man show back to my home town.

  • Explain to our readers what exactly a mentalist does?

Basically a mentalist is a skilled performer who uses various skills of magic and psychology to seemingly influence and predict human behaviour. I have studied psychology, magic and hypnosis and combine these skills into a theatrical experience that leaves audiences questioning the true potential of the human mind.

  • What can audiences expect when they attend the Hidden Senses show?

Hidden Senses is all about exploring the limits of our human senses. In life there are cracks in the way we perceive the world – this show is about exploring those cracks! We supposedly have only five known senses – what happens when we combine all of these senses? Can we create the illusion of a sixth sense? What happens if we remove one of our senses? Are the other senses heightened? These types of questions I explore on stage in a theatrical and entertaining manner. The show is interactive with lots of audience participation!

  • Why is there an age restriction on the show?

Simply because this show is not for young children. They will not be able to fully understand some of the ideas, and I don’t want them to come to the show but not understand what I am talking about. The show is good, clean fun – but not for young children.

  • Why should locals attend the upcoming show?

Locals who love magic, mentalism, hypnosis and psychology will enjoy the show! I’d also encourage locals to support live entertainment – especially as we are now able to move on from the pandemic. The Drama Factory is a wonderful venue and I am very excited to be back and to perform in my home town. If there are people who do not know what I do, I encourage them to google “Bryan Miles” and search for my videos on YouTube – my channel is bryanmilestv.
