A fitness enthusiast from Gordon’s Bay, who has been striving to bridge the gap between his work and his passion for inspiring others to lead healthier lives both physically and mentally, has finally found the perfect avenue – pageants.

Online personal trainer Johan Theunissen Vorster is vying for the crown as one of the top-10 finalists in the 2024 Mister South Africa beauty competition, a national male ambassadorship platform that allows the 35-year-old contestant to reach a larger audience and advocate for fitness as a powerful coping mechanism for mental health challenges. “I want to normalise discussions around mental health, fitness, and wellness for all age groups. By raising awareness, educating, and inspiring others, I hope to encourage fellow citizens to take that next step toward becoming healthier, better versions of themselves,” shared Vorster who is testament to his preach.

Vorster’s journey into beauty pageantry began when his fiancée took the initiative to enter him into the competition. Recognising the incredible opportunity to challenge himself and make a meaningful contribution, Vorster agreed to participate with purpose and determination. The reality of beauty pageants became clear to the novice during a photoshoot in the Mother City, where he captured his “entry” picture, setting the competition wheels in motion. From that moment the campaigning began, and it has been an exciting journey for him ever since. “I realised pageants aren’t just about physical beauty. They involve character, hard work and self-development. I believe pageants can offer a valuable platform for individuals seeking personal growth and a challenge. It’s a great way to break through barriers and learn in many ways.”

Vorster, who in using three words describes himself as “down to earth”, matriculated from Strand High School and obtained a BA degree in Human Resource Management. He started his online personal training business last year to align his work with his passion.

When asked what makes him the perfect candidate, Vorster said: “Mr SA should inspire others to contribute to society with purpose. He must be clear about what he stands for and lead by example, all while being relatable.”

His message to other young men: “Get fit, get healthy! Regardless of your age or circumstances.”
