NSRI responded to fatal drowning at Strand beach on Tuesday, 17 January.

A 20 year old man drowned at Strand beach on Tuesday, 17 January.

According to NSRI Gordon’s Bay, at 14h08 their duty crew was activated following
eye-witness reports of two persons in difficulty in the surf at Strand Beach.

CCTV camera monitors directed rescue services to the location where two persons were in difficulty in the mid surf break.

The CoCT water rescue network was activated – CoCT lifeguards, NSRI Gordons Bay duty crew, GB Med ambulance services, WC
Government Health EMS and their rescue squad,  CoCT Law Enforcement, Cape
Town Fire and Rescue Services and their Fire Dive Unit, the SA Police Services,
Netcare 911 ambulance services and the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter
responded to Strand Beach.

“CoCT lifeguards launched into the surf and rescued a 17 year old male to the
beach. He was medically assessed by paramedics but his brother, age 20, was missing. NSRI Gordons Bay launched the sea rescue craft Zelda and during a search the body of the man was spotted under water on the sea bed,” said Alan Meiklejohn, NSRI Gordons Bay station commander.

“An NSRI rescue swimmer, deployed from the NSRI rescue craft recovered the man
onto the rescue craft. He was brought to the Strand lifesaving club where
paramedics applied Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation efforts. After all efforts to resuscitate the man were exhausted sadly he was declared
deceased.”

The body of the man, from Delft, has been taken into the care of Government
Health Forensic Pathology Services and police have opened an inquest docket.

Condolences are conveyed to the family of the deceased man.
