False Bay Angling Club from the Helderberg emerged as the night’s big winner at the Western Cape Shore Angling Association (WCSAA) annual wards evening, recently held in Bergvliet which celebrated a season of exceptional angling prowess and team spirit. Representatives from the seven member clubs gathered to honor outstanding individual and team performances.
False Bay Angling Club not only secured the coveted Overall Winners trophy for the highest accumulated score across all competitions this season but also reeled in the majority of individual and team awards presented throughout the evening. Their consistent performance clearly set them apart from the competition.
Adding to the excitement, the WCSAA unveiled the provincial teams that will represent the Western Cape at the Junior Nationals in East London next January. The selections highlighted the depth of talent within the False Bay Angling Club, particularly in the junior divisions.
The Under-16A side will feature three of its five members from False Bay: Corbin Welthagen, Heinrich van Zyl, and Zak van Wyk. The management for this promising young team also hails from False Bay, with Pierre du Preez, Honorary Life President of the South African Shore Angling Association, serving as Manager, and Gowie De Jongh taking on the coaching duties. Notably, De Jongh was also selected for the Senior A National team, a testament to his skill and experience.
The WP Under-21 Team includes four False Bay Anglers: Alaine Peo, Vincent Walters, and two seasoned Protea anglers, Hermi van Zyl and Keanu le Roux.
Further showcasing their club’s strength, the WP Senior A Team will include False Bay’s Gowie De Jongh and Uwe Geisseler. Gowie de Jongh recently demonstrated his individual excellence by securing 2nd Place overall in a recent Western Cape competition.
Individual achievements also highlighted the evening, with False Bay anglers making their mark. During the 2025 South African Junior Nationals’ Schools league team competition, Corbin Welthagen secured an impressive 11th place overall in the Under-16 Division. He was also awarded the trophy for catching the most edible fish throughout the entire tournament, a remarkable feat.The False Bay Shore Angling Club, established in 1962, boasts a rich history and a strong contingent of skilled anglers, including 7 Protea and 32 Provincial anglers, proving their long-standing commitment to the sport.
