Departments within the City of Cape Town’s Community Services and Health Directorate are planning a range of activities to celebrate Women’s Month, with two events scheduled to take place in the basin.

“August is more than a look back at history,” Councillor Patricia van der Ross, Mayco Member for Community Services and Health. “While we commemorate the immense sacrifice of the women who went before us, it is also a reminder to celebrate our milestones as women and our extraordinary roles in society. It is an opportunity for us to acknowledge each other and our contributions.”

Departments within the directorate will host a number of special events aimed at women of all ages.

“There are opportunities at our facilities throughout the year for women to become empowered, gain information and join in our many programmes,” said Van der Ross. “If you haven’t yet, make this August the month where you sign up and join thousands of women who are leading the charge in our communities.”Among happenings taking place during August is a Women’s Day (Wednesday 9 August) event held at the Phambili Community Development Centre based at the Bethesda Evangelical Church, 9 Stork Road, Broadlands Park, Strand. All women in the basin are welcome to attend the event hosted in collaboration with the City, Strand Fraternal Churches and other NGOs.

Various health services such as screenings including pap smears, blood-sugar checks, HIV tests and family planning will be on offer at the event, which is expected to attract about 300 people, who can also look forward to a meal. Furthermore, food parcels will also be handed out to 150 families.

The Women’s Day event will be succeeded by another in celebration of women at Gordon’s Bay Library on Thursday 10 August. All women are invited for a session of foot stomping and beating of the drums.
