A local non-profit organisation based in Zola in Asanda Village, Strand, has since 2020 trained and upskilled at least 200 people in the fields of hospitality and other industries, guided them towards a qualification and assisted with employment.

Last Saturday (14 October) was another reason to celebrate a milestone when 82 members of the programme, consisting of young and old, graduated at a ceremony held at the Christ Church in Zola.

Known as Pure Mustard Seed NPO, the founder of the organisation is Vincent Ngwenya and, along with co-founders, are driven towards the development of job seekers and uses funds out of their own pockets to ensure professional courses are offered theoretically and in practice.

According to one of the facilitators, Jerry Molise the courses run over a period of six months, comprising three months each for theory and practical classes, and graduates afterwards are assisted with jobs throughout the province.

“Many students come from the greater Helderberg area and Cape Town and from Cape Town to enrol in our programme,” he said, “and the interest shown from various communities has motivated more courses to be offered. We’ve also included ‘Soul Healing’ sessions in the training, which provides counselling to our students. Many come from difficult, challenging backgrounds, and we identify obstacles and assist with a forward and successful trajectory.”

The only criteria for applicants is that they must be over 16 years of age and have a valid ID. The courses are offered free of charge.

“We are extremely proud of the most recent graduates and welcome enrolments for our next programme of hospitality courses, which will take place from the start of next year,” Molise said.

The organisation also welcomes sponsorships, donations and even collaborations.
