The Helderberg Village Music Society presents a concert by acclaimed classical guitarist James Grace at Talani Terrace on Sunday 19 May at 16:00.
Grace is one of the country’s leading concert artists and has performed with all its major orchestras. He studied at the Royal College of Music in London and was the first guitarist in the history of the institution to receive the prestigious Tagore gold medal, an annual award presented to the most outstanding student. He then spent two years in Doha teaching at an international music centre, after which he returned to South Africa as head of classical guitar studies at the University of Cape Town’s College of Music.
Grace has frequently performed throughout Southern Africa, Europe and the United Arab Emirates. Highlights in his career are the South African premier performance of Rodrigo’s Concierto Madrigal for two guitars with Jonathan Crossley and the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Alessandro Crudele in 2012 and, more recently, Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and visiting Dutch conductor Arjan Tien. In 2018 he organised and performed a nationwide tour with Mexican guitarist Morgan Szymanksi. The duo subsequently toured Mexico in 2019.
Two of Grace’s albums have received SAMA awards, the most recent being his seventh solo studio album Andaluza – Music of Spain III for Best Classical Album.
Tickets for the concert costs R130. Booking with Quicket is essential for access to Helderberg Village.
