Come and enjoy upbeat, rhythmic and melodious reggae sounds in the heart of the basin at a show performed by The Rivertones at The Drama Factory on this Sunday (27 November).
Through A Special Tribute to Bob Marley, UB40 and Eddy Grant the group will pay homage to the reggae legends of Jamaica and the United Kingdom.
Marley’s music is a typical Jamaican sound from the ’70s with powerful messages in song, while UB40 helped shape the British reggae sound with distinctive love songs and a more upbeat commercial vibe, and Brit Eddy Grant wrote many party-themed tunes with a fusion of island music and rock.
The Rivertones, Cape Town’s most popular reggae band, also perform internationally with their upbeat, skanking (a soulful dance style that originated in the Caribbean), joyful, old-school reggae sound.
They were also invited by the government of Madagascar to perform at awareness concerts across the island and were recently invited to perform at The New Orleans Carnival.
Founder member Roland Nair, who made his stage debut at age 12, performed with Marley’s band The Wailers in Cape Town in 2009, and after the success of his vocal performance he was invited to tour alongside Bunny Wailer during the Reunion Island Tour and performed at the UB40 after-party event at GrandWest.
The Rivertones’ show will feature reggae favourites such as “Redemption Song”, “Three little birds”, “One love”, “Buffalo soldier”, “Could you be loved”, “Jamming”, “Kingston Town”, “Red, red wine”, “Can’t help falling in love”, “Stick by me”, “Electric Avenue”, “I don’t wanna dance”, “Do you feel my love” and “Hope Jo’anna”, among others.
The show will take to the stage at 16:00. Tickets, at R160 (standard) and R140 (pensioners and students), can securely be booked online at www.thedramafactory.co.za or by calling 073 215 2290.
