Helderberg Falcons Football Club held a pre-launch event in Lwandle this past weekend, announcing their upcoming Easter weekend tournament entitled The King’s Smile Charity Cup.

On Saturday (23 March) representatives from Helderberg Falcons FC, sponsors and representatives from other teams local gathered at Lwandle Museum for the unveiling of the trophy and details of the tournament.

Bongani Michael, Helderberg Falcons FC deputy president and treasurer, welcomed everyone to the trophy unveiling and mentioned the club was pleased to announce they had been granted approval from the South African Football Association (Safa) to host the tournament.

“Initially we wanted to host the tournament earlier this year, but we soon learned we need to have lots of logistics in place before we can host such a tournament,” Michael explained.

“For example, we had to have paramedics on the field for the duration of the tournament, not only for the soccer players but also the fans, in case anything happened.”

He further mentioned that the 2024 Easter Football Championship will comprise 32 teams from across the country, and will take place at Lwandle Sport Complex, with R15 000 up for grabs as the first prize and a beautiful trophy. Teams that finish in second and third place will all receive medals.

The tournament is scheduled to take place from Friday 29 March to Monday 1 April.

“We want to give soccer players the exposure and we think that a tournament of this magnitude will definitely do that,” Michael said.

V Entrance costs R5, and every soccer lover is invited to attend the tournament.
