Gus Dreyer (59) and Mac Richardson (56), both Rotarians from East London, recently embarked on their second McClelland 1 000 Charity Cycle Ride.
The fundraising event saw the cycling duo cover a distance of 1 265 km, starting in East London and ending at the Gordon’s Bay Yacht Club on Thursday 6 March. They were welcomed by the yacht club’s weekly “talk shit and knit” group!
Their wives, Iona and Janine, were the “back-up” team, and no doubt added some fun to the journey, which had nightly stop-overs, including Stutterheim, Queenstown, Cradock, Graaff-Reinet, Aberdeen, Willowmore, De Rust, Calitzdorp, Barrydale, Robertson and Franschhoek.
Dreyer is employed as operations manager at the McClelland Adult Centre in Amalinda, which is an assisted-living home for adults with special needs. As a much-loved “uncle” to the residents, he was inspired to raise funds for the non-profit organisation.
Sponsorship for last year’s ride paid for a much-needed sprucing-up of the accommodation in the form of a paint makeover, and this year Dreyer was hoping to install as many solar panels as possible to cut down on the high cost of electricity.
