An 41-year-old man has been sentenced to 36 months correctional supervision for a culpable homicide that took place in March last year.

On Friday 10 March, a motorist was driving in the direction of Somerset West on the N2 when he decided to make a U-turn and apparently collided with a motorcycle.

The 45-year-old motorcyclist died on the scene and police appealed for the public’s assistance with additional information about the accident (“Info sought on fatal N2 collision,” DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette, 15 March 2023).

Sergeant Suzan Jantjies, spokesperson for Somerset West police, confirmed the suspect was sentenced in the regional court to correctional supervision for the culpable homicide on Thursday 18 January. “It is believed the accused, Joseph Machapa from Nomzamo was driving on the N2 towards Somerset West when he made a U-turn through the bushes and collided with the 45-year-old motorcyclist, who died on the scene.”

Jantjies said the docket was handed to Detective Warrant Officer Valton Lategan, who did a sterling job on the investigation.

Acting Station Commander Detective Lieutenant Colonel Sizakele Hantibi congratulated Lategan for ensuring a positive conviction was ensured.
