In what organisers are calling a “fairytale debut”, the newly formed partnership between Helderberg Rugby Club and Mr Accuracy Rugby Academy delivered a near-perfect performance last Monday (10 August), sweeping top honours at the Morningstar Junior 7-a-side tournament.

Fielding 40 young players across four squads, the junior teams dominated both age divisions, with both top teams going undefeated throughout the tournament to lift trophies.
The newly formed pipeline enjoyed immediate success against tough regional competition, capturing two overall titles and a third-place finish.

The Helderberg under-13 side put on a masterclass of high-tempo sevens rugby, sweeping through the tournament without a single loss to secure first place and take home the gold.
The under-11 first team similarly outplayed the field with an undefeated run to claim the division crown. Adding to the podium sweep, the under-11 second team fought through a competitive field to claim third place overall, bringing home bronze.

The triumphant outing comes just weeks after the official rollout of the joint initiative, which was created to bridge grassroots schools’ sport with club rugby development (“Structure for youth rugby bridging,” DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette, 12 August).

Programme manager and academy founding member Rutger Boshoff praised the players and coaches for turning preparations into silverware.
“Bringing home two trophies and a third-place finish in our very first official tournament is a testament to the tactical preparation of coaches Martin and Leon Smith,” he said.
The intensity and skill these boys displayed was simply incredible.
