A clean-up of the area around the Lourens River was conducted by the children of Ons Plek Helpende Hand, who joined forces with the Helderberg Ocean Awareness Movement as well as members of the community on Monday 8 July. Joey Lötter, manager at Helpende Hand, said it was important for the children to learn to look after the spaces around them and the importance of protecting the environment. “The campaign also form[ed] part of the holiday programme, and we strive to conduct a clean-up at least once every term,” she said. The group picked up tons of rubbish, clothing, election posters and even dangerous items such as knives. More than 30 bags of litter were collected in total.
