Motorists in Somerset West are advised to brace themselves for traffic disruptions as the City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility
Directorate started a comprehensive, two-month road-resurfacing project from Wednesday 12 March.
The extensive project, scheduled to run until Friday 30 May, will see a significant number of roads undergo vital maintenance.
Work will take place between 07:00 and 17:00 on weekdays, weather-permitting and barring any unforeseen delays.
Rob Quintas, Mayoral Committee member for Urban Mobility, emphasised the importance of the project. “I would like to thank the road users and the Somerset West community for their patience and understanding while we are busy on this project.
“Regular road maintenance is required to ensure the longevity of the city’s road network and to keep Cape Town moving. We are attending to quite a large number of roads concurrently, and our team’s intention is to finish this project within the specified timeline.”
The primary objective of the initiative is to resurface and apply fresh road markings to a substantial list of streets, including:

- Stella Street
- Aberdeen Road

- Van der Merwe Road
- Caledon Street
- Drama Street

Residents and commuters should be aware that lane closures are anticipated throughout period of the roadworks. Motorists are strongly encouraged to seek alternative routes whenever possible to mitigate potential delays.
