A host of blood group activations is being hosted by the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) at shopping centres in the province throughout October.
During these activations, potential donors will be able to find out their blood group and they will be educated on the importance of blood donation and their specific blood group.
The service will also end the month on a high note, hosting the 1 day – 10 malls – 1 000 units of blood campaign at the participating shopping malls, including Somerset Mall, on Saturday 29 October from 09:00 to 16:00.
What’s more, donors and potential donors can also drop by the WCBS’ five fixed blood donation centres in the Cape Metropole – Kenilworth Centre; Cape Gate Shopping Centre; Blue Route Mall; N1 City Mall; and the blood donation centre at 9 Long Street in the City Bowl – to donate blood.
The service tries to make blood donation accessible to everyone. As the need for blood and blood products increased over the years, so did the need to open new blood donation centres.
“Next time you are busy doing your monthly shopping at any of these malls, please pop in at any of our fixed blood donation centres and donate blood,” saic Marike Gevers, the public relations manager at WCBS.
If you are between the age of 16 and 75, weigh 50 kg or more, are in good general health, and lead a safe sexual lifestyle, you should be able to donate. Blood donation has never been this easy.
