A group of concerned locals joined the iMPAct awareness event at the Helderberg Marine Protected Area (MPA) on Thursday 16 June. They worked as a team to educate local dog walkers and fishermen on why the MPA’s rules must be followed and distributed key rings branded with the phone number to report transgressors, bags of doggy treats and an informational flyer. The Helderberg MPA is a home and breeding area for more than 40 bird species and, like most MPAs, is vital for the future existence of animal species, as they are a safe haven for nature to reproduce and be at ease. This is a productive biologically diverse area. Its role is to achieve long-term conservation of nature and the ecosystem. During the event, Locals were also reminded to adhere to the rules in place, which includes no fishing, no dogs and stay off the dunes. The event was organised by Helderberg Ocean Awareness Movement (Hoam) and Helderberg Sunrise Rotary Club, and supported by the Somerset West Bird Club, Hoam members, the City of Cape Town’s Coastal Management directorate and Helderberg Animal Rescue Team.
