WEDNESDAY 9 AUGUST

Strand: Celebrating South African women through music, comedy and drama, the second Women’s Month festival Your Voice, Your Stage runs at The Drama Factory from Wednesday to Sunday 20 August. Presented by The Drama Factory and F Creations, the festival highlights female-centric productions, presenting stories created by and performed by women. Featuring a line-up with something for everyone to enjoy, the programme includes the acclaimed satire He Had it Coming (Wednesday 9 and Thursday 10 August at 19:00), musical feast Rocksteady’s Women Of Rock Tribute Show (Friday 11 August at 19:30), arresting play The Good Dad (Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 August at 19:00), delightful physical comedy ’n Gek Vir Jou (Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 August at 14:30), romantic comedy The Authentic Way to Fake It (Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 August at 16:00), and the fabulous drag musical The Muses: Hades Gonna Hate (Friday 18 August at 20:00). Another highlight on the programme is one performance only by Angel’s Angels which takes to the stage on Saturday 12 August at 17:00.

Strand: A Women’s Day event will be held at the Phambili Community Development Centre based at the Bethesda Evangelical Church, 9 Stork Road, Broadlands Park. All women in the basin are welcome to attend the event hosted in collaboration with the City of Cape Town’s Community Services and Health Directorate, Strand Fraternal Churches and other NGOs. Various health services such as screenings including pap smears, blood-sugar checks, HIV tests and family planning will be on offer at the event, which is expected to attract about 300 people, who can also look forward to a meal. Furthermore, food parcels will also be handed out to 150 families. The event will be succeeded by another in celebration of women at Gordon’s Bay Library on Thursday (10 August). All women are invited for a session of foot stomping and beating of the drums.

FRIDAY 11 AUGUST

Somerset West: Reduce your stress and release those endorphins with Crossing the Borders featuring American comedian Joe Emilio. Want to learn to fight the Egyptian way? Or speak very best London? Then don’t miss out. Come and enjoy the stand-up comedy special directed by comedy legend Barry Hilton. Crossing the Borders is a hilarious and culturally diverse experience from this larger-than-life Texan, who uses his unique background to deliver a taste of cultural protocols and mannerisms that will have you rolling in the aisles. With his animated facial expressions and audience interaction he keeps the crowd laughing throughout the show, which is staged at The Playhouse Theatre tonight (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday) at 20:00.

Somerset West: The Full Monti, a 30-minute violin recital, is on at the Somerset West Library Hall at 11:00. The musical delight features violinists Francois Voges and Isabelle Mouton, and pianists Rose Geyer, Benjamin van Eeden and Cor Ellis-Gardiner. The programme includes works by JS Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and V Monti. Admission is free.

Somerset West: Ex local raconteur and much-revered Cape Talk Radio music presenter Shiloh Noone will be talking at Lourensford Wine Estate at 16:30. The address will take place in the Wine Sales and Tasting Room and entail an overview of his new book, Swimming with Salamanders, and the adventures of Sir Laurens van der Post with a small exhibition of San artefacts donated by “Oom Laurens”.
