Guest speaker Professor Harold Herman, a person steeped in Helderberg history, will share his extensive knowledge of this subject with an illustrated presentation. He will provide insight into the basin’s history from the 1950s to ’70s. His presentation will comprise photographs of street scenes captured in bygone days, showing buildings now demolished, renowned farms as the predecessors knew it and other images, which trace the development of Helderberg towns such as Somerset West, Strand, Gordon’s Bay and Sir Lowry’s Pass – under the Dutch, the British, after unification of the separate states into the Union of South Africa and the republic. Copies of Herman’s autobiography, From a Local Village to the Global Village: My personal journey in education in a divided South Africa, will be on sale for R350 (cash only).
