The Weekend Warrior Grabouw two-day stage race, grown by Tru-Cape and held at the Elgin Grabouw Country Club on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 April, raised R50 000 for beneficiary Grabouw High School.
Organised by Red Cherry Events and sponsored by Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, Shaun Glover of Red Cherry described it as “a thrilling two-day cycling extravaganza that saw participants tackling the challenging terrain around the apple-growing area of Grabouw.”
He said the action kicked off at 12:30 on Saturday, with riders traversing the beautiful Applegarth and Eikenhof sections of the Overberg’s Elgin Valley. “The route provided cyclists with stunning views of the valley’s rolling hills, lush orchards, and vineyards. It was a challenging ride, but the weather was perfect, making it an enjoyable experience for all.
“Day 2 started early, at 08:00 on Sunday, and took riders into the famous Oak Valley Estate. This section of the route featured some of the most famous single tracks in the area, such as Vissies, The Edge, and Wonderland. It was a thrilling ride made possible thanks to Trails End Bike accommodation and Oak Valley Estate.”
Glover extended his gratitude to Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing for its generous support as the title sponsor of the event.
“Its contribution to raising R50 000 for Grabouw High School is commendable, and we appreciate its commitment to making a difference in the community,” he said.
Conrad Fick, director of Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, and who completed the route himself, described the ride as “outstanding.” Himself a Grabouw High School alumnus and resident, commented that for Tru-Cape this event ticked all the important boxes to qualify for its support. “As the largest exporter of South African apples and pears, we receive many more sponsorship requests than we can agree to, but the Weekend Warrior Grabouw, because it is located in one of our main grower areas, is focused on the whole family and promotes a healthy lifestyle, qualified. And since it raises funds for the community in which it takes place, it gets a thumbs-up from Tru-Cape.”
