James Wing, a learner at Curro Sitari, competed in the A+ students/ C maths national championship in Johannesburg on Saturday 3 August. He finished at the top in his age group. The competition involves doing six papers – three for Saroban (calculating using an abacus) over three minutes and three papers for mental calculation. There are different levels of achievement: bronze, silver, gold, champion and champion of champions. Contestants are tested on time and accuracy.
