- Suspect busted for firearm, drugs
A 56-year-old man was charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition, and possession of drugs in Somerset West on Saturday 13 August. According to Somerset West police spokesperson Sergeant Suzan Jantjies the arrest was made around 10:00, when police members responded to a tip-off and seized a Z88 parabellum pistol, three 9 mm live rounds and 23 Mandrax tablets.The suspect briefly appeared in the Somerset West Magistrates’ Court and police have opposed bail. - Three arrested for driver’s assault
Three suspects were arrested after a driver for a mobility service provider fell victim to assault on Monday 15 August.Sergeant Suzan Jantjies, spokesperson of Somerset West police, said the incident arose from an argument between the driver and three occupants who refused to pay for transport services rendered.“The driver claims his services were called upon by five occupants who wanted to be transported from Lwandle to Eerste River,” she said. “En route the passengers, two women and three men, requested the driver to stop at a fried chicken takeaway to buy food. So the driver drove towards a petrol station located on the Old Sir Lowry’s Pass Road. One of the men asked the driver to lend R30 to one of the women, which he did on condition the amount was given back upon payment. A heated argument broke out when the occupants eventually refused to pay for the trip as well as the money borrowed. The three men allegedly assaulted the driver,” said Jantjies.The men, one aged 34 and two 35 years, were arrested on charges of common assault and malicious damage to property. - Pair nabbed for extortion
On Friday 5 August, provincial police members attached to the Extortion Team arrested two foreigners for extortion and recovered R3 500.The team received information that two men were demanding protection fee from a foreign business woman, who owned a shop in Grabouw and two others in the Strand policing precincts respectively. The suspects, both from Bellville, were demanding a monthly payment of R7 000. An operation was conducted, resulting in the arrest of the two foreign nationals, aged 34 and 38 years. They appeared in Grabouw Magistrates’ Court on the mentioned charges.
