Whether you are feeling out of shape or consider yourself the most unfit person around, if you have the desire to run for fitness, the Couch Potato Run and Fit Club’s eight-week programme for complete beginners is just for you!

The programme, Couch to 5 km Somerset West is back by popular demand and starts on Tuesday 15 October. With just 30-second run intervals and one-minute walks to begin, by the end of the programme you’ll be able to run for kilometres confidently.

About the event

The event is inspired by organiser’s mission is to debunk the myth that running is daunting by creating an environment where beginners can feel confident and supported every step of the way. Couch Potato Run and Fit Club’s aim is to make running accessible and enjoyable for everyone, ensuring that no-one gets left behind.

“We believe that running shouldn’t be intimidating; it’s all about finding the right approach that works for you. That’s why each of our programmes is led by a dedicated coach who not only guides but also runs alongside the group, providing support and encouragement every step of the way. We’re committed to ensuring that by the end of the programme you’ll be able to run a full 5 km confidently, regardless of your starting fitness level,” states an online write-up featured on its website.

What sets it apart?

There is absolutely no pressure to be fast at all. No specific pace is required to join in on the running fun.

The groups generally run at an eight- to 10-minutes-per-kilometre pace, focusing on building confidence first and speed developing with time.

Runners start slow and build up gradually. They are also supported in and out of the programme.

The coaches are always there for the runners. Need advice on new shoes? They’ve got you covered. Missed a session? They’ll send it over so you can catch up on your own. Everyone is in it together.

Every programme is led by a dedicated coach, running alongside the participants and ensuring their form is right, breathing is on point, and offering guidance every step of the way with unwavering support.

The programme kicks off on Tuesday, with sessions every Tuesday and Thursday from 18:25 to around 19:00 until 5 December. The location is the Shell garage in Lourensford Road, Somerset West. The group comprises about 35 runners who will be led by coach Mikhail.

The cost is R1 150 per runner.
