The 33-year-old constable from the Lingelethu West Police Station that was murdered on Christmas Day in Lwandle has been identified as Constable Surprise Kwezi Mnqabe.
Mnqabe suffered stab and gunshot wounds meters from his official vehicle between 06:30 and 06:45 on Christmas Day in Phaliso Street in Asanda Village in Lwandle.
Shortly after his murder four suspects were arrested and a firearm that was used in the murder was recovered. Three of the four suspects made their first appearance in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on 28 December. The accused are Nelson Motumi (27), Bongisizwe Dyongo (26) and Athenkosi Matutu (21).
According to Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani the case has been postponed to 10 January for a formal bail application. “Motumi was remanded in absentia as he is under police guard in hospital. The fourth suspect who was later arrested will appear today (30 December) in the Strand Magistrate’s Court.
