To commemorate World Clean-up Day on Saturday 17 September, Strong Schools Community Collaboration partnered with several organisations and schools to launch the Clean-up Nomzamo and Recycle Project.
It was held in conjunction with the City of Cape Town, the learners of ACJ Phakade Primary, Christmas Tinto Primary and Nomzamo High School.
The day started with a 30-minute clean by the learners around their respective schools and was followed by a gathering at ACJ Phakade Primary School, where each school’s learners shared their talents with beautiful singing and drama items. Afriworld also delivered a powerful drama about the dangers of illegal dumping.
“The morning was filled with jubilation, song and dance in celebration of the ability to participate in what started as an idea a year ago, and which was now coming to fruition,” Tania Theron of the GraySwan Charitable Trust, one of the partner groups involved in the project, said.
“Each drama piece and song was a lament of the state of the environment, but also a declaration of participation in making [Nomzamo’s] conditions livable and a place one can be proud of. We understand 191 countries participated in World Clean-up Day and what an honour it is for us, the GraySwan Charitable Trust, to be part of it all.
“We look forward to continuing to support initiatives such as these. It’s our freedom to see beyond wealth creation.” Strong Schools thanked GraySwan for supporting it and its partners in implementing the project.
