SOMERSET WEST – Somerset College has made a seamless transition to online learning and the use of virtual classrooms while keeping accessibility by learners top of mind.

The model is followed by all scholars from Grade 000 to Grade 12, using a range of learning platforms and tools. It has been beneficial for the school that the curriculum followed, has included the ESTEAM (Entrepreneurship, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Maths) principles, which have prepared learners and teachers to develop an innovative mindset in addressing the challenges that modern society presents.

The virtual classroom allows for teachers and learners to engage with each other as if they are in a normal classroom situation, and enables social interaction between peers on challenges they face, making the most of peer to peer learning and support.

Somerset College has taken great care to ensure all learners can access the chosen online learning model. With students coming from various parts of the world, challenges in accessing the internet have been addressed by the Acorn Bursary Trust, which has partnered with the school to provide the necessary devices and data for the bursary recipients.

The innovative manner in which the change has been effected has been applauded by teachers, parents, and learners alike. The Student Development Unit has rendered invaluable services in helping learners and their families adjust to the new reality. Combined with the available pastoral care provided by the college chaplaincy and well established tutor groups, learners have an established support network in place to ensure optimal well-being. Added to this, the daily timetable accommodates outdoor exercise with the school’s sports department and HIVE Fitness.
