It was a dominant display by Helderberg Cricket Club (HCC) in a First Division D match on Saturday (28 October) when they defeated Pollsmoor CC at Helderzicht Sports Grounds to claim a first win of the season after three games.
HCC were sent to bowl first and had no qualms as they executed their bowling and fielding duties superbly to restrict Pollsmoor to just 90 all out in 27.3 overs.
Damian Jooste starred with the ball (5-10) and he was ably supported by Gary-Jon Sylvester (2-7) to give the home-side the best possible chance to bag the game.
It took HCC just 21.2 overs to reach the target, albeit cautiously, to usher in a much-needed win. Jooste (26*), Declan Fredericks (22) and Tyrick Rossouw (21*) were the pick of the batsmen.
This Saturday (4 November) HCC will host Nyanga CC at Helderzicht Sports Grounds.
Sweet victory for HHCC
Hottentots-Holland Cricket Club (HHCC) first team celebrated their maiden win of the season in the First Division A league when they emerged victorious over UCT Cricket club at the Navy Sports Grounds on Saturday.
After being sent in to bat HHCC lost four early wickets and were on the back-foot, but a decent partnership between debutant Umar Crombie (26) and Shakoer Baderoen (27) brought the local lads back in the game. After losing both of them Rasool Thomas came to the crease and smashed a quick fire 65 of 50 balls (4 fours and 5 sixes) as HHCC scored a decent 203 all out.
The home team’s opening bowlers came out guns blazing and grabbed six quick wickets. Guillaume Jansen (3-36) and Imtiyaaz Oslodien (3-24) were in outstanding form. The students of UCT never recovered and were eventually bowled out for 127, handing HHCC a bonus-point victory.
On Sunday (29 October), HHCC first team travelled to UCT to face United CC in an AMA T20 clash. United batted first and started strongly in the power play. However, disciplined bowling allowed United to only manage 166-8 in their 20 overs. Oslodien (2-23) and Achmat Smith (2-33) were the pick of the bowlers.
With bat in hand HHCC started on fire scoring 60 runs in the power play (6 overs) with captain Waleed Smith (39 off 23 balls) being the chief destroyer. After losing four quick wickets, up stepped Thomas who carried his form from Saturday as he smashed 39 off just 13 balls and was well supported by Yaaseen Smith (20 off 11 balls) as HHCC grabbed a narrow three wicket win.
This coming Saturday (4 November) sees HHCC on the road as they face Vikings CC and on Sunday HHCC will face Avendale in their final AMA T20 group stage game at Pinelands Sports Ground.
SWCC maintains winning streak
Somerset West Cricket Club recorded yet another win in the First Division B league when they outplayed Wynberg CC, also on Saturday.
Sent in to bat first, SWCC started off a bit shaky as they lost a wicket in the second over which resulted in them scoring at a slow run rate. Tim Boyd and Matthew Dickson came in at number three and four and both batted confidently to stabilise the innings. Boyd and Dickson each scored a half century before Wiehann Meyer came to the crease. Meyer scored a rapid 72 off just 59 balls to help SWCC reach a total of 256/6 in 50 overs.
In the bowling department, SWCC had to work hard for a breakthrough which they got in the 14th over and thereafter seemed to control the game. They restricted the opponents from scoring at will and took wickets at regular intervals, and eventually Wynberg were bowled out for 140.
This Saturday (4 November) Somerset West will host Kuils River CC at Radloff Park.
