Strand body builder Cindy Lange in competiton action.

As a woman seeking to make strides in a predominantly male field a local body builder’s confidence and sass seem to be paying off at national level.

Cindy Lange clinched the win as a novice in the trained bikini division of the Physical Culture Association (PCA) Battle of the Titans Cape Town VII competition, which took place at the Oakhill Auditorium in Sonstraal Heights in Cape Town on Saturday 25 June.

Apart from kicking dust in the eyes of competitors in her line-up, she also had the opportunity to vie for title honours against body building pros and seasoned participants who have notched many wins, in the ladies overall category. The prestigious achievement earned the 25-year-old from Strand an invitation to participate in the PCA South African championships, to be held in Durbanville on Saturday 10 September.

“I hope to inspire other women and effect a positive and healthy impact on their lives as well as the industry,” she said. “We as women are extremely strong individuals and body building has enabled so many of us to embrace this quality. I want women to feel as good, comfortable and happy as they should be in their unique bodies,” said Cindy, who has her sights firmly set on another win.

The brand ambassador for AJ’s High Performance Coaching shared taking up the sport as she has always tried to be active and participate in physical activities that allows her to feel good about and be the best possible version of herself. “I believe that if you take good care of yourself and your body, all aspects of your life becomes healthy,” Cindy said. “And there are so many advantages of working out, not only do you train muscles but you improve your cognitive functions.”

Cindy draws inspiration from experiencing fellow athletes on stage, all the sacrifice and determination which has culminated in their participance. These “wow” moments are what allows her to push past any doubts and work hard in hopes of reaching the stage.

Cindy’s body building journey started in February this year when she started training with Achmat Richards of AJ’s High Performance Coaching. With his expertise she worked as though she was going to step onto a stage every weekend. After seeing a big difference in her shape in just 10 days, Cindy arranged for a photoshoot collaboration with RS Photography and Beesting in preparation for last month’s PCA competition.

Moreover, she reaped the fruits of her hard work and sacrifice, which also involved balancing work and full-time studies alongside training and dieting. “It honestly helped me find myself again and focus on myself. It enhanced my patience, my self-esteem and confidence. It brings me a joy and comfort I have never experienced before, and who would have thought it would be a path in God’s plan for me.”

Apart from the trophies and medals, Cindy appreciates reaching milestones, meeting industry giants and gaining friendships. The aspiring lifelong athlete who aims to bring an improved package to the competition stage every time, boasts a fitness schedule consisting of varying weight and cardio training sessions, six days a week (from Monday to Saturday) for more or less one hour every day.

“I would love to become a pro-athlete in future and am determined to work for it. So many women are stepping into the industry and it is extremely motivating and empowering.”

Cindy has a message for other aspiring sportspeople: “Body building is a work of art displayed on the body itself. Simply put your mind to it, put in the work, stay patient and consistent, and you will achieve your goals.”
