During June, the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) celebrates National Blood Donor Month.
During this month, WCBS endeavours to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation and celebrate, the remarkable act of saving lives through blood donation.
This year, this remarkable month is celebrated under the theme, “Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives”. The theme highlights the need for regular, unpaid blood donations all year round to maintain adequate blood supplies.
The WCBS have numerous exciting events planned for the month, kicking off with hosting blood grouping exhibitions at various malls over the first three Saturday’s in this month. Visit its social media to find out where it takes place.
On World Blood Donor Day, Tuesday 14 June, WCBS will celebrate at its Head Office in Pinelands, by hosting a special blood donation clinic in the Auditorium. WCBS encourage everyone to wear red on the day to show their support. The month’s celebrations continue with blood donation activations with various partners, where together the Western Cape is encouraged to save lives.
The month ends off on a high note with WCBS hosting its “1 day – 10 malls – 1 000 units of blood” campaign again. This event will happen on Saturday 25 June, at 10 participating malls across the province. The aim is to collect 1000 units of blood to help secure a sufficient blood supply, as the WCBS struggles with collections during winter months.
“We would like to encourage all eligible and potential blood donors to stand together, celebrate National Blood Donor month, and save up to three lives with one donation”, says Marike Gevers, Public Relations Manager of WCBS.
If you are between the ages of 16 and 75, weigh 50 kg or more, are in good general health, lead a safe sexual lifestyle, you should be able to donate.
