The Helderberg Youth Academy (HYA) plans to host a Strand Community Summer Carnival come December.
The objective of the event is to raise funds to develop sport facilities and create more skills-development programmes in conjunction with the Robert Sobukwe Nursing and Skills Academy in Strand. The carnival will be held from 13 to 16 December.
“Our priority focus will be to assist in the reparation and development of the Abattoir Sports Fields in liaison with the City of Cape Town and private companies,” said Shakoor Vallie, a director of the HYA. “We also need to develop skills training in the area to create employment opportunities and our main focus will be to lease land from provincial and national authorities. We need to raise major funding and intend to establish a community-based foundation for these purposes. The foundation will be led by the HYA in collaboration with professionals from the community in various fields of expertise to ensure transparency of operations.”
Vallie added that they will soon engage with all community organisations for an official launch of the event. He encouraged all organisations to partake in the inaugural community carnival.
“We will also appreciate input from all stakeholders for the financial success of the event,” said Vallie. “The HYA’s provisional plan for the event will guide us and organisations can help navigate the organising of this inaugural annual event.”
He urged organisations to plan their activities around the long weekend in December, as the HYA needs the support of all organisations. “The time has arrived to become self reliant to achieve progress for future generations. We encourage our local community to take advantage as they will get preference to earn for themselves by taking the stalls for trade.”
More details on the event will be made available in the coming months.
