The Somerset West Library is one of numerous City of Cape Town libraries playing hosts to another round of careers expos initiated to assist learners, patrons, unemployed youth and those interested in making an informed career choice during the month of May.

“The first round of careers expos took place in March, and I was encouraged to see so many young people taking hold of the opportunity for direction to a successful future,” said the Mayoral Committee member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.

“In May, we are hosting eight more expos with a few taking place outside of the library buildings.

“It is an exciting way to discover your future career and get the information you need to ensure you’re on track towards it.

“These expos are about more than just free career advice, but you’re exposed to occupations you may not have been aware of and have an opportunity to network and practise your interview skills.”

Partnering with external stakeholders, libraries remain an important vehicle for obtaining career information and will bring all the necessary role-players together under one roof to get younger patrons excited about choosing a career.

A careers expo will be held in the Somerset West Library hall from 09:00 to 12:00 on Saturday 13 May. Visitors can look forward to various tertiary institutions which will be available to assist students with application information.

There will be a talk by a professor from the University of South Africa (Unisa) about librarianship and a talk by a school guidance counsellor. National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) will attend as well to assist with applications and information.

Registration takes place from 09:00 to 09:15 followed by the opening and welcome by Ward 84 councillor Norman McFarlane.

Exhibiters include the University of the Western Cape, Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), South African Revenue Services (Sars), Boland College, Department of Social Development and Early Childhood Development, Helderberg Personnel, College of Cape Town, Northlink College and Stellenbosch University.

RSVP to Nizam Bray at 021 400 4820 or Nizam.Bray@capetown.gov.za to attend the formal programme from 10:00 onwards.

“I want to encourage learners to attend these expos,” urged Van der Ross.

“Arm yourself with the information you need to make the best possible career choice you can.

“A career should be more than just a pay cheque. And an expo may just be the place where you find your calling.”
