Lifeguards stationed on Helderberg beaches were involved in two rescues on Sunday (11 January).
In the first incident, a man was saved from the surf at Gordon’s Bay Beach, while the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services were called into action in a near-drowning in Strand.
Firefighters responded an emergency call at 13:50 after the man nearly drowned near the Strand Lifesaving Club.
Jermaine Carelse, Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, confirmed that emergency services and a firefighting crew from Strand Fire Station responded to the incident.
Lifeguards pulled the man from the water after finding him lying face down.
Emergency responders performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the victim, before he was transported to a medical facility by ER24 paramedics.
The man’s identity and condition is unknown.
Meanwhile, firefighters managed to contain a vegetation fire in Gordon’s Bay on Friday 9 January, after a call reporting the blaze was received around 20:30.
Firefighters crew from Macassar attended to the inferno in the open field just off Disa Road.
The fire was extinguished by 22:00.
The cause of the fire is unknown. No injuries or damage to surrounding properties were reported.
