Build It stores in Somerset West and Strand have been shut down for well over a month now, with little to no indication if they will ever reopen – and their head offices are keeping mum on the reasons.

Since Wednesday 19 April customers have expressed confusion as to why a note at the two premises stated “closed for stock take” and yet there appeared no date of reopening.

During that same week a local security company was tasked to change the locks at the business, and two weeks ago the Somerset West Build It Plus building at the Somerset Crossing centre appeared on property24.com as an available space for rent.

An email enquiry sent to the SPAR Group, under which Build It operates, was not responded to despite confirmation of receipt, and Girschwin Lewack, Divisional Executive at Build It, did not return phone calls by DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette.

There was much hype during the opening of Build It Somerset West when it started trading on 25 November 2021, and many residents have since expressed shock at its sudden closure.

There is also widespread speculation on the reasons behind the shutdown of the businesses in the Helderberg, particularly on social media, but none of the allegations could be verified.

According to the advert, “the building is new and has been home to Build It, so would be ideal for any business looking for large trading floor and yard space.”

The 2 612 m² property is currently on the market for R60 million.
