These Grade 11 learners of Parel Vallei High School, Anya Marx, Peter-Ivan Mitrovich and Caitlin Schoeman teamed up to compete in the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (Saice) Western Cape Bridge Building competition and placed third. Despite their busy programmes and being part of PV’s drama productions, the three learners still made time to “tungu” (turn up, never give up) resulting in this great achievement. This year 22 teams from 11 schools entered the competition. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the competition was in correspondence format, where teams were issued kits to complete their bridges in their own time. Bridges were then collected from the participating schools and transported to Century City, from where the competition was live-streamed. The judges tested the bridges according to the strength-to-weight ratio calculated to account for the span. The winner and runner-up for the model bridge competition was Brackenfell High School.
