The Bright Street Gallery in Somerset West has reopened following a short closure and is now exclusively supporting Helderberg artists.

While some of the artists are new and emerging, others are already established and recognisable to locals, and they all feature very modern abstract work and traditional landscapes, including highly detailed wildlife watercolours and bold oil and acrylic work. There is something for everyone from the 30 artists on board, and work ranges from oils and sculptures to jewellery and ceramics and mosaic work.

Manager Marusa Mason got involved with the Bright Street Gallery when she participated in a group exhibition a few years ago, followed by a solo exhibition in November last year. The gallery had been closed to the public since August 2022.

Mason recalled: “Diane White established the gallery a few years ago and ran it successfully, holding numerous exhibitions including the Western Cape Artists Society, the photographic society and various group and solo exhibitions.

“The Bright Street Gallery name is well-known and people have travelled from far afield to exhibit their work as part of the gallery’s themed exhibitions.”

She confirmed White had closed the gallery before relocating to Stilbaai, where she has a studio.

“When I held a solo exhibition last year the space really spoke to me and a dream formed to open the space up permanently to support like-minded artists. After much prayer and by God’s grace it become a reality.

“Everyone is welcome to visit the gallery. We are a place where people can come and relax, chat and enjoy a free cup of tea or coffee. Sometimes an artist may be creating work. Please come and chat, and enjoy the warmth of our environment. We believe art should be accessible to all.”

Mason said no artist will be turned away unless the gallery is full or the subject matter doesn’t meet the guidelines.

“What sets us apart from other mainstream galleries is that there is no commission taken from the artists. The artists may also work on site and are also expected to do a 3½-hour shift in supervising the premises if they can.

“We aim to strengthen relationships between fellow artists and buyers. We would like to support most creative arts including drama and music. The space is available to hire after hours for demos, workshops or classes. Get in touch with us.

“We are keen to collaborate with the surrounding businesses to boost public awareness, interest and investment in lower Bright Street.”

  • The opening hours of the gallery is Tuesday to Friday from 09:00 to 16:00, and Saturday’s from 09:00 to 12:30. To get in touch, email 33brightsg@gmail.com.

Work by artist Jean Veasey is also available for sale at Bright Street Gallery.
