Breyton Paulse headlines successful Strong Schools charity golf day at Erinvale

Strong Schools Community Collaborative (SSCC) hosted its annual Golf Day on Wednesday 21 October at the picturesque Erinvale Golf Estate.

Despite early morning torrential downpours that threatened to cancel the event the sun broke through barely two hours before the first tee-off, allowing months of meticulous planning by organiser Niel Thiart and his team to come to fruition.

The primary objective of the day carried serious weight: to raise essential funds to strengthen schools in under-served communities across the Helderberg region and Mossel Bay. SSCC operates on a core belief: “Strong schools build stronger families and thriving communities.”

Reflecting on the mission, Thiart shared: “Thatโ€™s the change our communities so desperately need, and itโ€™s how we build our future.”

Golfers enjoyed a full afternoon on the greens, punctuated by a welcoming halfway stop, before dressing up for an elegant evening gala dinner.

Springbok rugby legend Breyton Paulse — who earned 64 Test caps, scored 26 tries, and represented South Africa at three Rugby World Cups — served as the master of ceremonies. Beyond keeping the crowd entertained with his signature warmth, humour and wit, he shared a poignant message on vision, determination, perseverance and hard work.

“He made us all stop and think about what life is really about,” remarked Thiart.

SSCC board member Blackie Swart addressed the room to outline the collaborative’s ongoing initiatives, but the defining moment of the night came from a Grade 11 prefect at Hope and Light School. Moving the room to total silence, the young leader shared her personal journey and her dreams for the future, illustrating first-hand how SSCC’s support has transformed her life. Many of those attending noted that her testimony captured the true spirit and purpose of the entire event.

The evening concluded with a lively prize-giving ceremony filled with laughter, alongside a spirited live auction where guests bid generously on premium prizes donated by local enterprises.

“All in all, it was an amazingly blessed day,” said Thiart.

The success of the event was made possible through the support of key corporate partners and sponsors. Special thanks were extended to the staff at Erinvale Golf Estate, SSCC volunteers, the event sponsors, and all participating players.

SSCC is a registered public-benefit organisation (PBO 930070182), meaning qualifying donations are eligible for Section 18A tax certificates.

Businesses, individuals and educational institutions can partner with SSCC through corporate sponsorships, monthly donations or volunteering. Every rand raised goes directly towards changing a young person’s story and building a brighter future.
