Two storage units were damaged in a raging fire that broke out at a self-storage facility in Somerset West on Sunday (12 May).
Black clouds of smoke were seen billowing from the business premises of Secure Storage located at The Interchange around 10:30, which is approximately when the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service personnel was called to action.
Spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said three front-line fire engines, and a water tanker and rescue vehicle with 24 firefighters were dispatched to the scene in Old Paardevlei Road following an emergency call, alerting them to the blaze.
“The first arriving officer requested additional resources as it was confirmed to be storage units alight,” said Carelse.
“By 11:15 the fire was extinguished. Two storage units were damaged in the blaze. No persons were injured in the incident.”
DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette reached out to the business for comment on the incident, but representative Sharon Nel declined the opportunity, saying that they “cannot comment on the incident at this stage in time.”
