In their 13th consecutive victory of the 2022 Super League B campaign, Helderberg made light work of the poor oppositio Young Peoples provided at Daljosafat in Paarl on Saturday (6 August).
Eight tries after the start, with the honours very evenly spread with four tries by the backline and four to the forwards, the final whistle shrilled at 0-54.
It all started in the fifth minute, when outside centre Lynn-Jay Hendricks romped over in the corner. Scrumhalf Marshall Douman easily converted (0-7).
In the 12th minute a strong run by the left wing Luke Hertz found Hendricks on hand, who scored his second try under the sticks. Douman managed to convert again (0-14).
In the 20th minute flanker Schalk Burger started a movement in his own half and took play into the home team’s 22, where he combined with hooker Hafeez Adams, who rounded off near the corner flag. Douman again added the extras (0-21).
In the 25th minute Hendricks again featured, passed to Burger, on to Hertz and back to Burger, who scored behind the posts. Douman converted (0-28).
In the 35th minute captain and eighthman Estehan Visagie scored from a ruck and Douman again converted (0-35).
In the 38th minute full back Danvino Swartland fielded a defensive kick to feed his right wing Jodi Koul, who crossed the line in the corner. Douman made no mistake with the conversion (0-42).
In the dying minutes of the half Koul got the ball on the halfway line and sprinted all the way to the corner unopposed (halftime: 0-47). Douman, for the first time in the match missed his goal attempt.
Hooker Adams scored his second try in the 45th minute and Douman converted (0-54). With 30 minutes of the match left and Young Peoples forwards red-carded, the referee rightly decided to call the game with the final score on 0-54 in favour of the visitors.
V This Saturday (13 August), Berge will play its final league fixture, barring the play-offs and a possible friendly.
