This October, businesses in the Helderberg region are being challenged to step outside their comfort zones and experience the harsh reality of homelessness first-hand.

Organised by Helderberg Community-oriented Project Service (COPS), Thomas House and Oasis Centre, the “Live the Experience” event invites participants to spend a night on the streets, understanding the challenges faced by those without a home.

The event, scheduled to be held at the Charles Morkel Stadium in Strand on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 October, is more than just a fundraiser or awareness campaign. It’s a powerful call to action for businesses to step up and make a tangible difference in the lives of homeless individuals.

Participants will experience first-hand the challenges faced by homeless individuals, including limited access to food, shelter and basic necessities. The event will also feature educational talks and opportunities to interact with homeless individuals and hear their stories.

“It’s not enough to just talk about homelessness,” says Hendrik Cloete, founder of Helderberg COPS. “We need to take action, and this event provides a unique opportunity for businesses to do just that.”

Jolenbe Cloete, also of Helderberg COPS, added that businesses are urged to step up, contribute and get involved.

“Many people complain about homelessness and vagrancy but what are you doing about it? This is your chance to help and make a difference. The event is tailor made for the individuals from all backgrounds, so that you can take it only as far as you want to. Support the event, interact with the homeless and listen to their stories,” she said.

“We will also have a tin food drive and children’s clothing drive to support those that need it the most.”

Getruida Hendricks of Oasis Centre emphasised the importance of community responsibility and restoring dignity to homeless individuals. “Homelessness is a global issue,” she said. “We need to provide good skills training, feeding schemes and support for reintegration into the community.”

The organisers hope to attract 2 000 participants for the event, which is open to individuals and businesses. Tickets can be purchased online at uticket, with corporates and businesses paying R500 and individuals paying R250.

By participating in “Live the Experience”, businesses can demonstrate their commitment to social responsibility and help to address the pressing issue of homelessness in the Helderberg region.
