Raging fires, brazen cable theft, cyclists targeted by suspected armed robbers, and other types of crime have made headlines this week.
These incidents are but some of the problems Helderbergers have to face. It once again calls for us to stand together as a community and prioritise efforts to curb these evils and ensure a better society and future for our children.
Hence, willingly take up the responsibility of being the eyes and ears of your community and, in so doing, aid the work of police. Be a whistleblower by reporting just one wrong doing, and you can help an entire community, aid saving a life and curb crimes. This past weekend vigilant community members of Macassar, including the local ward councillor Peter Helfrich, helped authorities nab suspected cable thieves who have been relentless in their quest to loot for a quick buck. Their collective efforts, which resulted in numerous arrests and the recovery of cables, served as proof of what can be achieved when a community comes together.
We all want the best for ourselves and the next generation. The only way to ensure this is to be part of the solution. Do not be one of those who stand on the sidelines and criticise the authorities or other entities. But rather be a proactive member of the community who recognises the importance of doing one’s bit and helping build a safer society for all.
