A registered non-profit organisation known as Awe Works organised a special outing for a group of youngsters on the autism spectrum. The treat was planned considering that April marks World Autism Month, which started with World Autism Day on Tuesday 2 April. On this day altogether 30 children, accompanied by siblings and adult supervisors, were treated to a movie at Ster-Kinerkor Somerset Mall. Awe Works director Carmen Snyders said the organisation caters for many clients from the basin, including Strand and Nomzamo. Contrary to expectations, the children were remarkably well-behaved, fully embracing the cinematic experience, for which many it was the first. Snyders expressed gratitude for the understanding shown by fellow cinema goers and praised the accommodating attitude of the staff. Reflecting on the success of the outing, she emphasised the importance for parents of autistic children to confront their fears and actively engage in more outings with their children. Overall, it was an immensely rewarding experience for all involved,” says Snyders.Photo: Rick Marais
