The ninth Art & Wine Auction in aid of the Somerset West Night Shelter facilities will be hosted at the prestigious Avontuur Estate this Friday (2 June) and promises to be a fun-filled evening with a few surprises and great value for money spent for a worthy cause.
“Being Capetonians we all know that love of art and wine goes together, so it can only be a winner,” reckons organiser Paddy Judd.
She said the annual event has been hosted for a number of years and aims to raise funds for both the Somerset West Night Shelter’s Adult and Family Shelter.
“Since we have two shelters to keep operating, it is imperative that we keep fundraising as we have young children to care for and an increasing number of people to feed, especially during winter as more require shelter from the weather.”
She said the event requires loads of hard work which entails reaching out to the community and beyond to source products, constant marketing and the proverbial village. A lot of effort is also focused on securing the ideal venue for the event. However, to ensure good lighting needed for the artwork display and infrastructure to seamlessly transition to a backup system when the power fails which is imperative Avontuur was preferred as the host venue.
However, Judd said, the fruits reaped are that more and more artists are keen to support the shelter’s efforts, which offers a professional platform to showcase their artworks, while spirit and wine connoisseurs are intrigued by the offering and the possibility of discovery.
Among donations that were gifted towards the cause and will be auctioned off on the night include a range of paintings from both professional and new and upcoming artists alike, such as Richie Ryall, Jan Pentz, Christina du Plessis, Winnie Eaton, Kathy Christie, Stephanie du Plessis and Merissa Slingerland, to mention a few, who will be ‘catering’ for every art lover’s taste in vivid colours and different-sized masterpieces. Special mention goes to Jane Barnes who has showed her valued support with donations of her paintings and art (barrels) over the years.
The qualified and established professional artist paints and teaches from her own studio in Somerset West. Her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries both locally and abroad. Her paintings and painted wine barrels have been sold and auctioned to corporates, businesses, and private collectors around the world.
Furthermore, the auction also features decades-old brandy, vintage wines of many varieties, giveaways of experiences such as stargazing and wine- and brandy-tasting, as well as a getaway to a beautiful five-star hotel in Cape Town with accommodation, dinner and wine included and a nougat gourmet hamper.
“Also on offer fun, unexpected surprises, lucky draws and raffles, and loads of laughs during a great night out,” says Judd. “We also have a very talented Francois Naude auctioneer, who is very entertaining.” She further implores interested individuals to get a wriggle-on and book their seats as they are expecting a ticket sell-out.
