With a view to sharing their knowledge of the history of growing apples and pears in South Africa, two technical experts in their cultivation have co-authored a third book showcasing one of the country’s most important export industries.
People, Pears and the Stories they Share, by Henk Griessel, responsible for ensuring the quality of the final product at Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, largest exporter of South African apples and pears based in Somerset West, and Buks Nel, who works on new varietal development, was launched at the International Pear Symposium held in January in Stellenbosch.
On Thursday 16 March, the authors and illustrator Ros Nel shared excerpts from the book as part of a broader talk that formed part of the Friends of the Somerset West Library programme.
Griessel’s company, Tru-Cape, exports products especially of companies wholly owned by their direct growers, Ceres Fruit Growers and Two-a-Day in Grabouw.
- Copies of all three books, including Apples in the Early Days at The Cape and The Newcomers, as expected to be available from Somerset West Library after their cataloguing had been completed.
